Chamkaur Singh, National 1500m Record Holder.

On a dull Monday morning, 31st May 2010, we met Chamkaur Singh and his wife at the cafe in Macritche Reservoir. We sat down and had a chat over a cup of hot Milo. It was a once in a life time meeting with such an inspiring chap and as the time passed, our day got brighter.

He talked about his experience of running and also misconceptions and issues on training and here below are our learning points from this discussion with Chamkaur Singh.

  • One must have the passion for running.
  • One must set goals for himself and work hard towards it with the help of his coach.
  • One must reach deep within himself to achieve their goals and do not always depend on the help from anyone or any association.
  • Do not give up at any moment when goals are being set.
  • Enjoy your training and do not overdo it.

After which, we took pictures with Chamkaur Singh, National 1500m Reord Holder.

We will like to thank Chamkaur Singh and his wife for taking time out to meet us and we wish Chamkaur Singh and his wife all the best in whatever they do.

Oon Shui Kun, The Strong-willed Runner.

Temasek Polytechnic, Wednesday, March 24, 2010 - Oon Shui Kun collasped at the last 200m from the finishing line of the 51st National Inter-school Cross Country Championships, missing out on the chance of clinching the A-Division Champion or finishing 1st runner-up, close behind Lim Zhi Ming of Raffles Institution with a time of 15:21. It was really a depressing moment, after all his efforts vanished before him. However, Choa Chu Kang Stadium, Monday, April 5, 2010 - he bounced back, claiming 3rd Placing in the A-Division 5000m race (17:03) of the 51st National Inter-school Track and Field Championships despite the fact that he had to represent Hwa Chong Institution in the National Inter-school Canoeing Championships the following day, which the Canoeing Team emerged as Champions.

Oon Shui Kun joined the Cross Country Team in late November with the intention of helping the Team to bring glory to the school. His first race was the NIKE 5km Time Trial held at Macritche Reservoir in early December where he came in 4th Placing with a time of 18:30. He also took part in the Singapore Press Holdings 4 X 800m relay which he did a 02:08 for his time split. He continued to train hard till early of January where his efforts started to pay off as his improvements were magnificant during the workouts and the time trials. Almost once, he managed to hit a sub 15:00 for the Cross Country route under non-sunny conditions which he ran solo without the help of anyone.

In spite of his lack of experience, Oon Shui Kun still managed to break his limits and pose a threat to all of the best runners in the A - Division. He showed determination, aggression and courage and was humble at all times - The Stong-willed Runner. In the years to come, I believe that Oon Shui kun with much experience will be able to establish himself as one of the top runners in Singapore under the guidance of Mr Rameshon.
